In order to design a playground suitable for the students, your team of two must gather data to determine what type of playground equipment third and fourth grade students like to use based on the different types of playground equipment available to students.  You will have to make sure the equipment fits into the available area and calculate the area and perimeter of each piece and work within your budget of $200,000.  How important is recess? Check out these articles to find out how recess can actually improve your grade!

You may choose to read one or both of the articles below. I recommend both so you'll have more knowledge.

Important Information:

Before you design this playground, you MUST read the article linked below to find the six essential keys for playground design.  Summarize what you learned about playground design with your partner.

Talk to your partner to determine who will survey the third-grade class and who will survey the fourth-grade class. The partner surveying 3rd grade will be the 3rd Grade Liaison. The partner surveying 4th grade will be the 4th Grade Liaison.

Team Member One:  3rd Grade Liaison -- Survey a third grade class to determine their playground needs based on the choices provided in the catalog. Calculate how much money it would cost to purchase their top five playground choices.

Once data is collected, share this data with your team in Google Drive (Google Drive Shared Document) to determine how much it will cost to provide the third and fourth graders with their top five playground choices. If both grade levels chose the same equipment, you may be able to add more items to the playground. Remember, you are working with limited space and a limited budget. Make sure there is enough room for all the pieces on the playground.

Your team will be required to present your playground design to Mrs. Sutherland and  Mrs. Heathrow utlilizing SMART Notebook software, PowerPoint, or through your Google Drive.  This presentation must be visually attractive and present the survey results, playground budget, proposed playground design with area and perimeter calculated for each piece of equipment with an explanation of why your playground design should be chosen. Refer to the rubric on the evaluation tab at the top of the page to see how your project will be evaluated.
